R.C. Sherriff’s anti-war classic JOURNEY’S END is an extraordinary coup for the newly established Esher Theatre. Theatre Reviva! bring their gripping production, to the venue’s opening season.
Set in a frontline dugout during the First World War, this story plays out over four days in March 1918 as five British Officers wait for an upcoming attack. Full of beautifully observed humanity and understated heroism, R. C. Sherriff, who went to Kingston Grammar School, drew on his own experiences as a Captain serving in the East Surrey Regiment in the trenches; and this first-hand authenticity told through a hilarious, exciting, shocking, and poignant script has kept the play, and subsequent films, a triumph for a full ninety years. This production is not to be missed.
“No other British play about the Great War by a veteran, has ever topped it” quips local professional Director, Graham Pountney. “We’re delighted to have the chance to act on the same stage R. C. Sherriff did, many years ago when he brought the play to this very space. Its very fitting, particularly in this special week of remembrance."
